Vernal Equinox

First Day of SpringHappy First Day of Spring!
(March 20th) This is called the Vernal Equinox, a term meaning ‘Spring’ and ‘equal night’, where the sun crosses directly over the equator, and the days and nights are roughly equal. This marks a transition from longer nights to longer days, and the sign that spring is here.

It is also the first day of the sign Aries, which is the beginning of the Zodiac calendar. On March 19, the last day of Pisces ends, the last sign of the zodiac, and symbolically the last day of winter. Spring begins with Aries; new, fresh energy, and the new year begins.

One interesting fact about the vernal (Spring) equinox is that the ancient Great Sphinx in Egypt was built facing a direction where its face points directly at the rising sun on this day of the year.
